I am back!

We returned from vacation on Sunday and boy oh boy was that a long, but wonderful, trip. I can certainly see us doing that one again. Next time though we will add an extra day so that in the middle we have a break.

My rest didn't last long. I came back to 2 sick sister-in-laws who needed help with the kids so off I went. In fact I am still helping take care of the kids. I wanted to take at least 1 day off before I was back into my routine of babysitting but as you can tell that didn't work out as planned. After today I have to get some cleaning and organizing of my house done. Lots and lots going on right now.

This next 3 weeks will be very stressful. Something I am not looking forward to. Can't say much about it now but will very soon. With a little faith and tequila we will all come through this just fine.

Unintentional Hiatus

I took an unintentional hiatus from this blog and a few other things to gather myself and prepare for the sale of my business. No matter how professional I tried to look at it, all I could see was I was selling something that was so dear to me.

I had hoped a nice Christmas vacation to Disneyland with my family would clear my head and bring me home ready to take on the world with my newest venture, Party Gals. It didn't really. All I could see was how many changes were made to the business I sold (I didn't seek them out, I seen them advertised by other wahms) and it truly bothered me. As an artist who dabbled in advertising art in college while earning my degree in animation some things I just see as amateur with cutsie graphics and no real professional presence. I do however see the care taken in marketing.

Today I seen yet another marketing piece with amateur graphics and taking away the essence of the business. I know, I know. But when you put so much into it and you should be looking at it as a business deal and just move on, I just can't seem to do so.

My days have revolved around taking care of my niece and nephew but the days have been split and erratic that sometimes I don't even have much time with my own family. I think some people do forget that and it does make it hard trying to explain that. I have taken steps to begin to keep those days less random so I can spend more time with my family.

With spending so little time with my family I don't seem to find time to cook for them. Either its take out or they have dinner ready by the time I get home. It was really nice to cook them dinner last night and doing so again tonight. It is the little things you take for granted or simply forget the pleasure it does bring to you.

We are leaving again for another vacation in less than a week. It was an unexpected trip that came after a very nice windfall from a remaining held sum from my car accident settlement. We decided to go during the spring and celebrate my son's 17th birthday at Disneyland. We will also be celebrating my husbands birthday with a belated gift of NASCAR. We decided to go with the Budwiser Block Party pack so everyone could go to the pits have a truly memorable first NASCAR race experience. My husband is all about racing so this is especially exciting for him. We order the Southern California City Pass so we will have 3 days in Disneyland, 1 day in Universal Studios, 1 day at Seaworld, and 1 day at the Wild Animal park. We arrive a day early which allows us to rest after a 12 hour drive and even visit with some family (we are from CA so lots of family still there).

When we return we have a lot of changes coming our way and will be a lot of hustle. It will be a blessing to go away to relax and come back with a fresh outlook.

Coming back will also open up new life for this blog and give opportunities to new postings as I find new passion in my Party Gals and Baby Bottom Bakes business.

While trying to redirect my thoughts I started a blog about my Disney adventures in and out of the disney parks. Disney is in my life daily. Without trying I have something disney on me at all times. My current purse is mickey, my keys have mickey and minnie keychains, I am often seen wearing a mickey shirt in some way, and I have my mickey necklace I wear from time to time, and my watch that I can never seem to lose (not that I want to). Disney has always brought me great pleasure. Also Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse were my inspirations for going to college and getting my animation degree.

For 3 years I did it all. Upwards of 18 hour days. I think the idea of selling part of that gave way to allowing me to see what was really important to me and also show me I can't do it all. I see so many WAHMs talk about doing it all and taking on more than 2 businesses. I think 2 is tough when done right. Trying to do more, the right way, is nearly impossible if you want to have any personal time or family time. Some will disagree but if we are bring honest about it, something is sacrificed every single time.

No more unannounced, or unintentional, hiatuses.

Going from a full-time-plus WAHM to a part-time WAHM running 3 businesses (Party Gals, Teaporia, and Baby Bottom Bakes), 1 of which I own, has made major changes in my life. I closed my purse business recently. It was terribly sad but with the constant troubles I ran into I lost my passion for it. I hope to one day reopen as I regain the passion.

I refocused on Party Gals, a romance company. For years I had tossed the idea around about joining a company such as this. I kept putting it off because I was unsure of how my family would accept my venture. When I was close to closing my purse business I began looking around for a new direction in a completely different market. This is when I sat down with my family and asked how they would actually feel with knowing others new my business. The support was incredible so I jumped at the chance.

Teaporia is a company I have represented for a couple years now and love it. I have always kept this as a very part-time business by choice. Its a fabulous company with great products. I used this company to help boost my other businesses such as a purse tea party and now days naughty tea parties.

My personally owned Baby Bottom Bakes started from a hobby of many years as more and more requested my diaper cakes and other goodies. I opened my website several months ago more as an informational point but soon to take on orders for shipping. I am very particular about my cakes so I want them to be perfect through shipping. They will do just fine as they ship but still nervous. I do however have other items shipping which has become a fun adventure. Being it is only me I am staying small as business builds and eventually will take on a small staff that can create these handmade gifts to order.

When I am not working I am usually babysitting my niece or nephew. My niece is 15 months currently and my nephew (also my godson) is 10 months. My baby is 16 so its nice to have baby time. Its even more special that I can be so involved in my nieces and nephew's lives.

My son is the typical teenage who is trying to be as independent as possible. That makes mom a very uncool person to be around unless of course he needs money, he is sick, or he wants mom time and we head out to starbucks. My husband not only works his full-time job but he also is in college full-time and plays race car driver on the weekends. That doesn't give us much time together as a family but we do manage to come together every sunday at my mothers for family day.

In 4 weeks we will be in CA for a Christmas vacation with Mickey Mouse. In all the years I lived in Socal I never once visited the magic kingdom during any of the holidays. Last year was my 1st visit during Halloween and it was so fun seeing the park with new eyes. We also visited Universal Studios on Halloween at their Halloween Horror Nights. That was amazing! One of the best times I have ever had! We opted for the RIP tour. If you get a chance, try the tour. This year both parks will be fully decked out for the jingle holidays. I love Dr Suess so the idea of playing in whoville is very exciting. I am very excited to see Disneyland yet again with new eyes. Plus for the 1st time in about 10yrs I will be celebrating my birthday and we will be at Disneyland the day of. All of us kids have been cursed with a birthday within about a week of Christmas so to have it all to myself without the combo gifts is a very pleasant idea. We are going with several family members so this is just so exciting. We go to Disneyland so often its become like home. Still fun each time we go but to have the added excitement of something new always brings something fresh to the vacation.

Even with all that is coming I am still looking forward to the 2 of the 3 sit-down family dinners we share each year. Its special and many of my memories of youth have come from these special dinners. The smell of turkey throughout the house, football game on the tv, and the chatter of family masked with the laughs and screams of the kids is always a delightful time.

I will be one of those nuts shopping on Black Friday so wave in my direction if you are out there too!

New Changes

This past week I made the decision to close my purse business. It was tough but after a few days absorbing my decision I think it was the best decision. I do have the ability and desire to reopen this at a later date but focus on a retail location supplemented with a website. It will be of course a brand new start including a brand new name.

I have not given up all my business ventures. I have recently joined Party Gals (a romance company) and very pleased with the products, customer service, least amount of limitations in building a business I see fit including adjusting my hostess rewards to go above and beyond what the company offers. I really love the warranty. I can offer my customers up to a 90 day warranty. I have not found another company that can offer the same.

I also have my tea business through Teaporia (http://teatimewithliv.com) and I also have my diaper cake business at Baby Bottom Bakes (http://babybottombakes.com). So while I have ended one venture I still have 3 others going strong and in a direction I am happy with.

I can't help it!

I am not typically a jealous person but when I feel cheated I am. I don't care if it is petty to others or even being selfish. It is how I feel and nothing will change that.

In April I was to accompany both brothers, their wives, and their children for a trip to Disneyland. Life happens and things kept getting pushed back leaving us without the time so trip was canceled. It sucked but it happens. So we decide December is a must do for us all and right around our birthdays. The trip will be special on so many levels -

* Elizabeth's and Chase's first Disneyland trip
* Mine and Dan's first trip with Emma to Disneyland
* Our first trip all together (all 3 of us kids and our families)
* The first time in many years I have celebrated my birthday (the last day of the trip will be my birthday)
* Captain EO reopened after Michael Jacksons death so this will be the first time we will all see it since it closed but we get to take out families to enjoy it
* The first Christmas we have ever spent at Disneyland despite living an hour away for 17yrs

Why I no longer feel it is special

* Elizabeth went this week instead on a last minute trip. No matter how someone candy coats it you will never relive a first time so don't try to make it better
* They are all going to see Captain EO
* It has become a week long birthday celebration for everyone going which is absolutely ridiculous
* Chase will have his first time at Disneyland nearly a week before we arrive in CA
* Anthony and Nikki will not be there for my birthday but I will celebrate Anthony's (this is due to work scheduling)
* They are having a special belated birthday celebration for the girls

Things would have been different if things were planned out this way instead of a last minute trip. To go I would have had to have my own car and my own hotel room. Whether intended or not I would have become the nanny and spent a lot of time waiting for everyone else to get off the big rides. Plus I would have missed Phillips first day of school. May be the 11th grade but still the first day of the 11th grade. Not a lot of fun.

It doesn't help that not long before this was Elizabeth's first birthday. I did all I could to spend a little time with her at the zoo (where her birthday party was held) and all I got was 2 minutes to hold her while she got cleaned up. I even tried to kiss her bye and she was pulled away from me while doing so. Every time I got close to her someone was pulling her or preventing her from seeing me. It starts to feel personal after awhile.

I just feel like I am getting sloppy seconds and nobody cares how I feel. If they are so determined that I do not get those firsts them maybe they should come right out and say it. At least I know where I stood and can learn to accept it.

These special moments are very special to me and I just want to be part of them. I don't need to take them over. Just be part of it. Is it really too much to ask? Apparently so.

Ramen Noodle Pouch

I am always looking for quick ways to make dinner and keep things interesting. I found this recipe a couple years ago. It is easy to change up to fit your family or taste. Trade shrimp for fish. I think Tilapia works best since it cooks quickly but many fishes work well. I took out the sake but left it here for the recipe. Also I changed the vegetable broth for chicken broth. Try chopped cabbage or bean sprouts. The possibilities are endless with this recipe.

Ingredients

* 2 packages Ramen noodles
* 1/2 cup dried mushrooms, chopped
* 20 large raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
* 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
* 1/2 cup sliced scallions (green onions)
* 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
* 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
* 1 quart vegetable broth
* 1/2 cup mirin or sake
* 1/4 cup soy sauce
* 4 teaspoons sesame oil
* 4 (18-inch) squares aluminum foil

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Divide ramen noodles evenly in center of each of the 4 pieces of aluminum foil. Stack the following ingredients on top of noodles, in this order: mushrooms, shrimp, onions, scallions, red pepper flakes, and salt. Pull sides and corners of pouch up to form a small basket shape leaving an opening at the top to pour in liquid.

In small bowl, combine vegetable broth, mirin, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Distribute liquid evenly among packs. Press foil together, leaving a small opening to allow steam to escape. Place on cookie sheet and bake in oven for 15 minutes. Serve immediately.

The last 3 years I have added 2 more names to the list of what I am called on a day to day basis - Tia (aunt) and Nina (godmother).

I can't say its the easiest of jobs because its not. It is however very rewarding and gives all those warm fuzzy feelings inside. I spend at least 2 days a week with this bunch and upwards of 5 including an overnight stay. The 2 youngest are 5 months apart so that is a challenge. Add a 3yr old who moves faster than a speeding bullet and can destroy a room in 2.2 seconds and it gets pretty chaotic. Then for a little fun you throw in a hormonal teenage boy who has seemed to become one with his new cell phone and only hears keywords like money, food, and yes, well you have just welcomed natural disasters into your home.

As a WAHM having these 4 on any given day, whether together or separate, that allows presents challenges. These may not be my children but I live a life as though I was a mother of 4 (3 of which are 3 and under). Just when I get a moment to answer an email, pop a binky on the floor. Time to wash! Pop it back in a crying baby and a toddler wants juice and attempting to water the kitchen attempting to make her own concoction. Of course that means stop everything you are doing and hurry before the house floods. After the last drops all soaked up into the dripping towel, someone just set off a stink bomb so they all join in. Start an assembly line of one off to the potty, and 2 on changing pads to ruin my appetite. Then heaven calls (que music here) - NAP TIME! HOORAY! I can answer a email, make a call, and check on inventory shipments. 20seconds later (at least that is how it feels) babies awake, toddler destroying, and its back to pamper patrol. When its time to go home and take care of the understanding man that sometimes forgets what I look like since I can scarce at home, people wonder why am I tired and why can I not get any work done expect late at night? Its simple. I am lazy and do absolutely NOTHING all day long.

Thanks to the makes of 5 hour energy I am happy that I managed to get deliver 3 kids unharmed even if the hair is not exactly brushed to perfection, or the clothes have a drip left over from lunch, or I forget that I didn't wash the last bottle and get ready for the next round of feedings. The balancing act changes from day to day but the tactics and skills do not. They only improve.

This is the life of a work at home mother and I wouldn't change it one bit!

I've been doing these for years and after the baby shower for my nephew/godson it was time to begin. I created a few more diaper cakes aka Diaper Bakes™ since the baby shower and just solidified the demand for these in my area.

Shrimp, Tortellini & Spinach

What You Need!

1 pkg. (9 oz.) refrigerated cheese tortellini

1/4 cup KRAFT Roasted Red Pepper Italian with Parmesan Dressing

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (14-1/2 oz.) no-salt-added diced tomatoes, undrained

3/4 lb. cooked cleaned medium shrimp

1 bag (6 oz.) baby spinach leaves

1/4 cup chopped fresh basil

2 Tbsp. KRAFT Grated Parmesan Cheese

Make It!

COOK pasta in large saucepan as directed on package. Drain in colander; set aside. Heat dressing in same pan on medium-high heat. Add garlic; cook 1 min. Add tomatoes and shrimp; mix well. Bring just to boil. Stir in spinach; cover. Simmer 1 to 2 min. or until spinach is wilted, stirring occasionally.

STIR in pasta and basil; simmer, uncovered, 3 to 4 min. or until sauce is thickened, stirring occasionally.

SERVE topped with cheese.

Kraft Kitchens Tips

Chicken, Tortellini & Spinach

Prepare as directed, substituting 1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts, cooked and cut into bite-size pieces, for the 3/4 lb. shrimp.

The First Dance

Saturday my son went to his very first dance with his very first real girlfriend and also happened to be their very first real date. They attended winter ball, a semi formal dance.

I was proud he was such a gentleman. Made me feel good and told me he actually listened to what his father and I have been saying.

We didn't get to order pictures since they are sneaky in requiring payment the night of with no peek at packages, prices, anything. We were able to snag a few pictures as he arrived to pick her up so those will have to do. I was a little shocked they did not offer even punch at the dance and not thinking I didn't give extra money to hit up the vending machines since the dance took place in the school cafeteria. I figured simple refreshments would be included and nothing indicated to the contrary. Live and learn. Next time we know how the game goes and will play it well.

It occurs to me looking at the picture how young he still is but when I see him in person I see someone older (will be 16 in a few months). I am convinced he photographs young.

In the end they had a wonderful time and that is all that matters.

Time to catch up

I was going through my various blogs and checking my posts only to find I have not updated here in almost 2 weeks! Bad Liv!

Its been an interesting couple weeks. Nothing major.

If I am not spending time with my family especially my nieces and godson I am submerged in work. I am revamping and refocusing where my business is going. This past year was about testing the waters with new products and ideas. I have the information I need and its time to move forward full force. Next week will be 2 yrs since I bought the company which leaves me 3 yrs to open a retail location. In 10 yrs I plan to have 4 locations and a fully blossomed consultant program.

There is unofficial plans to have my niece and godson baptized this April. This has me on the look out for special items such as his outfit, a special cross, and the blanket I was baptized with (somewhere buried in my closet I'm sure. I want as many of the babies in the family baptized with the blanket as it is passed down from generation to generation. I considered having my baptized in my son's outfit but I want my first grandson to be baptized in it so Chase will get a brand new outfit.

Like most people I have seen the news about the terrible earthquake in Haiti. My heart certainly goes out to the families affected. Sadly there is several who are upset that Americans are rushing to their aid when Americans need to focus on Americans. While I can agree with that statement I also agree when we are able lets help. Who cares if they have come to our aid. You help others out of the kindness in your heart not because you kept score and only help those who helped you first. There are people dying, trapped, giving their lives trying to rescue others, mothers crying because their children will never come home. These people need food and water. Its not as though they can go to the corner market and buy food and water. Stores have crumbled, refrigerators are under rubble, food and water have been contaminated. Not only that, how many Americans are vacationing or visiting family? Should we just ignore the fact they traveled outside of their home country? I think its awful when I see people speaking ill of those wanting to help. There is no need to speak unkind. Keep it to yourself.

I noticed some speaking unkind words for the government not helping those in need during this recession. Unemployment is being extended. Not by the states but the federal government. Not many realize this. When state benefits run out they turn over to federal. There are many who have turned to agencies such as welfare for assistance, food banks for food and clothing, non-profit organizations to help with their utilities. If you are out of work you get more assistance than if you take a pay cut and have a hard time paying your bills. I am not saying either is fair but some are not looking at the entire story.

In February I plan to participate in a can drive to help our food pantries. They are suffering. They are still getting donations and sometimes more than in the past. Its the huge increase in those needing their assistance that is the problem. Some complain that big companies such as Walmart are not donating enough. The problem there is in times like this they are inundated with donation requests. They can't donate it all. There is a limit to what everyone can do. Most of those around me can donate a minimum of 1 can of food to help the local food pantries. If I give up 1 Starbucks a week that is at least 5 cans of food a week I can donate. Did you know food pantries could also use pet food? Why tear a family apart. Pets are family members and they need to eat. Luckily our local food pantry receives donations from a pet supply store (its either petco or petsmart. can't remember which). They also need formula. If you have extra pet food or unused cans of baby formula, donate them. Can't donate food? Donate those old clothes you no longer wear including shoes. Don't forget to donate towels. You know how many could use towels to shower with. Look at donating personal hygiene items such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, even female personal products. Just make the call and see what they need and accept. Get your team at work together, sports teams, moms club, carpool, those you see on the bus everyday, jazzercize class.

Next time you see a lady at the store carrying her louis vitton using food stamps, remember she may have been able to afford it 6 months ago but today she is without a job and needs food for her kids. You may need the help too one day so don't judge a book by its cover as the story may be heartbreaking.

Not the magical bubbly fairy tale type but a godmother I am. I wouldn't mind the sparkly wand.

Today we welcomed Chase Damien to the world via c-section

He weighed in at 6lbs 12oz and a lengthy 20 1/4 in. long.

Mom, daddy, and baby are doing great! He has a big sister waiting at home for him. He also has aunts, cousins, uncles, grandparents, great grandparents, friends, and probably a few neighbors. He's stuck with us now!

While doing my blog reading at http://www.momtriedit.net I came across a great post - Boo Boo Fixers. It is a ketchup packet that she keeps in the freezer. She personally keeps about 5 in the freezer at a time. They don't freeze completely and you can bend them to fit the boo boo just right. What is even better is they are free! Just grab some extra at the drive-thru next time or store those extras in the freezer instead. They thaw quickly so why not.

Crisp Rice Christmas Trees

Today we made Crisp Rice Christmas Trees. We used the crisp rice treats we all know and love, shaped them into cone shapes while still warm (cold these are impossible to shape), covered in a layer of green tinted vanilla icing, the pull and peel licorice, and decorated with coated candy. I made a double batch and ended up with 12 trees. Wrap in a cello bag and tie off with a ribbon and little gift tag and you have a great little treat to give away.

This was intended to be done with my 2 yr niece and 15 yr old son. Somehow I ended up doing this myself. I had fun though. This came from a memory of 4th grade when we had these treats made and given to us by our teacher. Instead of rice they used circle cereal.

This set didn't come out as pretty as I would have liked but it was an experiment and I was trying to make it kid friendly. Next year I think we will do this again and make it a tradition.

New Baby Coming to Town

Yesterday we celebrated my nephew's upcoming arrival with a baby-que. These tend to be coed so there is always something fun.

This is my first nephew who will join a big sister (2 1/2yrs old) and 2 big cousins (15 yrs old boy and soon to be 5 month old girl). Not only will this be my nephew but also my godchild. That makes him a special little man in my life.

We are all very excited as we wait for time to tick away and that much closer to his arrival. Unless he gives mom and dad a surprise he will be arriving on Jan 11 via schedule c-section. Until then I will make the attempt to be a tiny bit patient as our newest family keeps us on the edge awaiting his arrival.

In the meantime, I have been making diaper cakes for baby showers I attend (one shown a few months back I created for my niece's baby shower). This last has perfected my technique and inspired me to create and sell these locally. I don't want to make this a large business since I currently own 1 already and rep for another. It will just allow me the personal customer contact, customization, and the crafting I love to do. I do several baby shower gifts and favors so this will be a fun adventure to dive into.

Do your morning stretches. Those parking lots are longer than they look.
Eat breakfast but nothing heavy. You will need your energy.
Don't arrive early. Just arrive with padded knees and crawl the floors.
Use ear plugs when the rudeness song commences.
Go with a plan and keep moving. Never stop and you will be stuck!
As you come up to your desired purchase, grab and go. Look at it later. Someone you pass will want it.
Take the mp3 player. It helps to pass the time while waiting patiently in line.
Wear steel toe boots and pad those ribs. Never know when you might become clumsy.
Bring someone tall. They can grab things you can't.
When all else fails, stay home and shop from a WAHM from home!

I was part of those crazy people hitting the stores for good deals starting at midnight. I hit up 2 stores, awesome deals, and knocked 8 people off my nice list. The rest I will watch the sales, shop online, maybe even a little barter. The naughty list is easy. Sticks and coal for everyone!

Turkey day is coming and my mouth is already watering just thinking about the juicy turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, hot rolls oozing with butter, pumpkin pie and lots of whipped topping. Although tradition states you are supposed to be recreating the original dinner of the 1600's, we are traditional in the way of making our own traditions and sharing what we are thankful this year.

Being a mixed family of different cultures we also celebrate Thanksgiving with Puerto Rican dishes such as arroz con gandules, tostones, and a Mexican favorite of tamales. And because we all love my mothers potato salad this will also grace our table. My brother the culinary student will be creating for us a wonderful creme brulee while his wife makes a wonderful pumpkin bread.

The women will cook and craft, the children will play, the men will watch football. Because you can't split up Thanksgiving like you can with Christmas some will have 2 thanksgiving dinners that day. This Thanksgiving my niece Elizabeth will enjoy her very first thanksgiving dinner. Although she will not be able to partake in the delicious food spread, we will all share in the memories of her very first thanksgiving meal.

We will end our night with wii games as we prepare to brave the lines of the midnight sales starting at the Disney store moving into the wee morning hours to grab the best deals. Lucky for us the lines are not insane and we can easily navigate the sales without being trampled.

Craft Addiction

I have to admit it - I am a craft addict. I think it mainly stems from coping skills created to deal with ADD. A typical behavior of those with ADD/ADHD is incomplete projects. Being I have to complete a project at some point related to work, crafts I do not. It becomes my balance and subconsciously it allows me to deal with this.

While that is not the only reason, I just like crafting. I consider myself a fairly creative person. Through crafting I can enjoy that creativity. I often start with a project that I throw myself into fully then stop because I get bored. Eventually I pick it back up so I store my crafting items.

If you see my crafting area, you will wonder why I have so many. I know I do. I am currently on 3 crafting projects. One is baby shower items, keychains, recycling items into usable accessories. Soon this list will be birthday party art pieces (my niece is having a candyland theme and her family is going all out!) and I will pick back up my bow making as my youngest niece will have enough hair to wear them.

I have the itch to make Christmas ornaments but not sure I have enough time to make the amount I would need for family gift giving. Being I am fidgety (another ADD/ADHD trait) I need to always have something to do with my hands. Helps my husband stay sane. Blogging also helps with this. Blogging also helps with the 30 thoughts going through my head at any one moment.

So back to where I was... with so many crafting projects and the need to always have a project on the table I consider myself an addict. I can't be without a project even if I am not actively involved.

I am hoping next summer to begin a play area for my nieces and nephews to include a play house, fairy garden, and a few other tid bits I am thinking through. This will take about 2 yrs to complete and allow me to expand as I get the itch.

I would like to purchase a shed of some sort to store all my crafts neatly and also give me a mini workshop outside of the house. Ever heard of Man Cave? Well this would be the Woman Cave.

So who is with me? Any other crafting addicts out there?

WAHMs

As a WAHM it has been with a teenager. As my son was a young child I worked outside of the house even going to college for 2yrs while he learned in kindergarten and 1st grade. I never had a young child at home while a full-time WAHM. This week on and off I had a 2 yr old and 3 month old (my nieces) while trying to work. This certainly proved difficult. While I could still accomplish all I needed it wasn't without trial and and error. I don't think some realize how difficult it really is. Even I thought it would be easier than expected and I even expected problems. Next time we come across a WAHM especially one with young children still at home, look upon them with a new found respect. It is not as easy as it looks. As a woman wishing to extend her family with a new baby I have different expectations and plans for if and when this happens.

Personal Goals

After this past weeks vacation I realized I really need to drop a few pounds (about 50 to be realistic) and get in better shape. It was hard keeping up at first. Our muscles were so tired and my asthma was at an all time high. These could all have been alleviated by being in better shape. I don't expect to be in great shape. Just better.

My goals are to begin walking on a schedule. Not just when I feel like it. I will start with every other day. That may go through Jan since winter is near. Being on a hill and ice being an issue from time to time, I may not be able to step it up until we get past the worst part.

Next is to cut down on the sweets. Being I work from home it is really easy to snack on poor choices. If its easy I grab it. I will switch to fruits and vegetables that I can cut up making it easy when I need to snack.

Cut back on the Starbucks. I really enjoy my Venti White Chocolate Mocha. Instead of 2-3 in a week I can cut that down to 1 or 2 and move to a grande instead.

Watch my carbs. I love pasta and breads. They can be a serious downfall. I need to balance out my meals rather than cut them.

Drink more water. This past week I realized how little I drink water. I drank more this week than I have before.

I will take more "me" time. I always tell my son if you look good, you feel good. I need to practice what I preach. In years before I have done this and kept my weight at a reasonable level. Since purchasing my business in Jan '08, "me" time is hard to come by. That will change.

This all really is minor changes in my life but I need to be more aware and on top of them.

Where have I been?

This week we have spent out time in California on vacation. This is our first official vacation. We started off at Universal Studios attending their RIP tour of Halloween Horror nights. It was fantastic! This years theme was Saw so you had several characters from the Saw movies chasing quests with chainsaws. The mazes were even better and the tour was priceless.

From there we moved to Disneyland and California Adventure for 4 days. Good times, good times. Great rides, great food, great weather. Being a California native I am not new to Disneyland. Being a family of Disney lovers, my son is no stranger either. My husband was the least exposed so there was much to share. We vacationed with my brother and his wife. This was not only the first real family vacation my husband, son, and I have had, it was also the first family vacation with other family members as well.

We had to take a day to rest after 3 days going full force. Our poor feet just couldn't take it anymore. After all 3 of us sleeping most of the day away, it was obvious it wasn't just age beating us. The young hyper one needed a good rest too.

We had the opportunity to spend the early evening at the beach. While the air was cool and the water cold it was nice to walk along the beach barefoot and collect sea shells. Something I have not done since I was little.

Many memories were created and shared this trip. Its sad to say good bye but we will be back and I can't wait!

Work on Vacation?

As we prepare to leave for vacation tomorrow the last few days I have been trying to work out how to get work done while driving. I figure its a long drive (12 hours) so why not take advantage of getting some work done while I in the passenger seat. Why in the world do I want to work on my vacation? The habits of a work at home mother never die.

You Don't Do Anything

That is the one phrase I hear that I can't stand. During the week at some point someone needs something and when I decline that is the phrase that appears.

As a WAHM it is hard for others to see that you actually work. Even my son will walk in the house and instantly ask if he can use the laptop. He looks at me when I say no because I am working as though I just spoke an unrecognizable language.

There are a few low rent offices nearby that I have considered inquiring about. It is merely for the change in perception that I don't nothing all day.

I think what makes it hard is when you hear WAHM you think just direct sales. You don't tend to think of running a business from home. Not that direct sales WAHMs don't work hard and long hours. Its the mindset is the point. There are many places this does happen but where I live its not widely seen or heard.

Its even harder when family members compare the work and school my husband does. Its not recognized that I do something. Its believed I am lazy, use my husbands money, and chat all day on the computer. My solution to changing this view has always been to invite these people to spend a day with me and see exactly what it is I do. Once person in particular refuses. Not sure if its because I will prove them wrong or its a simple fact they don't like me. I am ok with both. It is how it is. I just wish that each visit with this person I do not have to tolerate the comments or defend my actions in every way possible.

All I can say at this point is I do work long hours. I work all day and well into the early morning hours. A 16 hour day is not uncommon and many days I can only hope it ends before the 17th hour. I even work on the weekends. Sometimes to the displeasure of those around me as I answer emails through the blackberry.

Next time you come across a WAHM remember they work hard. They have a job. Maybe not in an office outside the home but they have a job. During that time they are often interrupted with children, spouses, meals needing to be made, cleaning to be done, dogs to be walked, errands to be run. Sleep is a privilege for the WAHM. Support a WAHM.

Ever Considered a Maid or Personal Assistant?

I certainly have. As a WAHM I am busy busy busy. It would be a weight lifted to have someone come in once a week to clean or have a personal assistant take care of the little tasks 10-15 hours a week.

While casually mentioning this someone chimed in to inform me I was spoiled and that is only for the rich. With the reasonable costs of these services and the amount of time newly made available to me, I would be in a position to make more money.

They way I figure it is my time is roughly worth $40 an hour. If I can hire a personal assistant to take on a few tasks at $10 an hour I come out ahead. That is an extra hour I have to work. This is worth it to me. That means instead of running to drop off bills, pick up milk and dog food at the store, get gas for the car, quick run across the floor with the vacuum, I can be working.

I get back a minimum of 1 hour a day if I have someone else do these for me. $40 an hour minus $1o for assistant = $30 profit.

So its not because I am rich and spoiled. It just makes sense for me. After the beginning of the year I will have a minimum of a housekeeper once a week. Moving into spring/summer as I move forward with plans to open a store starting with exposure in fairs and expos, an assistant will be greatly appreciated and needed.

For much of what I need I could hire a mom to help me out and they can bring their young child; possibly children depending what I have on the task list that day.

Next time you could use extra time to work instead of every day tasks, consider an assistant. Hire a SAHM who wants to make a few extra bucks.

Grey before my time

There are moments as mothers we think quietly to ourselves that we are not doing the best we can for our children. Those times may be when they are screaming at us for not getting the right cereal, refusing to clean their room, throwing a tantrum in the middle of the store, a failing grade at school. Parents of special needs children may encounter this feeling several times in a short period.

I am the parent of a teenager with severe ADHD and a few learning disabilities. There are times I know he can't help doing what he does but I get to the point where I feel as though I have not done enough. I sit back and know its not my fault or his fault for that matter. That does not dissolve the feeling of failure.

A youtube video was recently posted displaying an incredible outburst by a teenager who lost his online game privileges (you can search for mom cancels warcraft account). Everyone kept commenting how it was staged and was not real. The main reason it was believed to be fake was because nobody could believe a teenager could be that angry. The sad part is my child has been that angry and emotioanl at times. To me it was reality hitting me in the face. To others it was hilarious and fake.

Even when I look back at the times I am ready to pull at the hair dye to conceal my age, I am reminded of all the wonderful things I am proud of. I am proud he is outgoing, creative, silly, intelligent, a good cook. I hear from parents how he is so polite and well behaved. Those are the moments I am reassured I have done my job.

I am not the perfect mother but I do my very best. I am there when he is ill. I am spending the night when he is in the hospital. I am there to cheer on his sports and plays. I am there to watch the moments he is proud. I am there when he is sad. I am there to dust him off when he falls. I am there to support him when he is standing tall. I will be there when he goes off on his own. I will be there when he brings that girl home I don't like. I will be there with a box of tissues on his wedding day. I will be there when he believes he isn't the perfect father. I will be there to remind him it is ok and he is a great father.

Today he may not realize it but I love him more than anything. Tomorrow he will learn I wasn't the evil troll who restricted his 10pm curfew and why I did it. Next week he will see the tears I shed, not because he was a bad child, but because I am so proud.

He will tell himself he will be a better parent than I but one day find himself doing the exact same things; saying the exact same things. For me that is the best compliment. For me its because he has learned why I did what I did and wants to pass that on.

Halloween Treats

With my son a teenager and not interested in the fun parts of Halloween, I am finally able to do these with my niece who is 2 1/2. I am very excited when my newest niece who is 2 1/2 months and my nephew who due to arrive late Dec/early Jan will be able to take part in these activities.

This year I will be taking my son to something we can enjoy for Halloween - Universal Studios Hollywood. We will be screaming and running from monsters during their Halloween Horror Nights and taking their RIP tour. You can see this at http://www.halloweenhorrornights.com/hollywood/2009/index.php.

Because we will not be home this year for Halloween I want to do some special treats prior. I did a search and found the best and easiest recipes were at the kraftfoods.com in their Halloween Center. Not only did they have sweet treats but meals as well. How fun would it be to have a pre-Halloween dinner. She's a girly tomboy who loves monsters and finds them amusing. From a simple search of easy cookies or sweet treat turns into the planning of a Halloween themed feast.

These actions will protect against 2009 H1N1 too!

Flu is a serious contagious disease. Each year in the United States, on average, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized and 36,000 people die from seasonal flu complications.
This flu season could be worse because there is a new and very different influenza virus causing illness called 2009 H1N1. CDC expects both 2009 H1N1 flu and seasonal flu to cause illness, hospital stays and deaths this season and is preparing for an early and possibly severe flu season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urges you to take the following actions to protect yourself and others from influenza (the flu):

Take time to get a flu vaccine.

CDC recommends a yearly seasonal flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against seasonal influenza.

While there are many different flu viruses, the seasonal flu vaccine protects against the three seasonal viruses that research suggests will be most common.

Vaccination is especially important for people at high risk of serious flu complications, including young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease and people 65 years and older.

Seasonal flu vaccine also is important for health care workers, and other people who live with or care for high risk people to keep from making them sick.

A seasonal vaccine will not protect you against 2009 H1N1.

A new vaccine against 2009 H1N1 is being made.

People at greatest risk for 2009 H1N1 infection include children, pregnant women, and people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease.

Ask your doctor if you should get a 2009 H1N1 vaccine.

Take everyday preventive actions.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
Try to avoid close contact with sick people.

If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.)

While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them.

Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other measures to keep our distance from each other to lessen the spread of flu.

Take flu antiviral drugs if your doctor recommends them.

If you get seasonal or 2009 H1N1 flu, antiviral drugs can treat the flu.

Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaled powder) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body.

The priority use for antiviral drugs this season is to treat people who are very sick (hospitalized) or people who are sick with flu-like symptoms and who are at increased risk of serious flu complications, such as pregnant women, young children, people 65 and older and people with chronic health conditions. (Most people have been able to recover at home from 2009 H1N1 without needing medical care and the same is true of seasonal flu.)

Antiviral drugs can make illness milder and shorten the time you are sick. They may also prevent serious flu complications.

Antiviral drugs are not sold over-the-counter and are different from antibiotics.

For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started within the first 2 days of symptoms.

Flu-like symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may also have vomiting and diarrhea. People may be infected with the flu, including 2009 H1N1 and have respiratory symptoms without a fever.

Home Drug Tests

As a mother of a teenager I hope that I have raised my son to be responsible and make good choices. We have had the talks concerning drugs, alcohol, and sex, but I am always worried the peer pressure will speak louder than the lessons he has learned.

I have always told my son I can and will drug test him randomly. I know all that I used to get away with when out of my parents sight so I am not naive to the fact there is something that will happen that I do not approve of. Just as I will periodically check up on any social networks he is involved in, I will check to make sure he does not involve himself in bad choices concerning drugs and alcohol.

This past weekend I made my way to Walgreens where they have home drug tests available. They have single tests for cocaine, marijuana, steroids, alcohol, and multi tests that test a variety of drugs. I chose a multi test that would test for drugs common in our city.

I am proud to say he passed with flying colors. Nothing came up questionable including his behavior. He did not fight it, seem overly nervous (beyond the nerves of a first time drug test by mom and dad).

Sadly I know there are kids in or around his peer group that have experimented with drugs, alcohol, and nicotine. With knowing I may randomly test him again I just hope he continues to make the right choices and not put himself in a bad position.

Slow-Cooker Pot Roast

Get a head start on dinner with this fresh take on a slow-simmered, all-in-one meal that makes clean-up a breeze.

Serves: 8

Total Time: 4 hr

Prep Time: 15 min

Ingredients

1 tablespoon(s) cornstarch
8 medium carrots, cut into thirds
2 medium onions, each cut into 8 wedges
Coarse salt and ground pepper
1 (3 pound) beef chuck roast, trimmed of excess fat
2 tablespoon(s) Worcestershire sauce

In slow cooker, stir together cornstarch and 2 tablespoons cold water until smooth. Add carrots and onions; season with salt and pepper, and toss.
Sprinkle roast with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper; place on top of vegetables, and drizzle with Worcestershire. Cover; cook on high, 6 hours (or on low, 10 hours).
Transfer roast to a cutting board; thinly slice against the grain. Place vegetables in a serving dish; pour pan juices through a fine-mesh sieve, if desired. Serve roast with vegetables and pan juices.

Living on a budget

In today's economy many are playing it safe. Being careful about your money doesn't mean not spending at all. Not spending is the worst thing we can do for our economy. If no money is flowing, the economy worsens. So how do you spend without going overboard?

Set a budget. Layout your bills. Know what is coming in and out every month. Know your monthly pay then begin to list all you have to spend - mortgage/rent, utilities (electricity, water, gas), phone.

Set a budget for grocery shopping. Make a list of meals for the time period in which you are shopping. If you shop twice a month, you need enough meals for 14 days. If you spend what you need, you will get through the basics. In your grocery shopping cut those coupons. Check with your local store about price comps. Walmart is big about matching prices of other stores. Use your grocery list to shop through grocery store papers and coupons. Never ever go to the store hungry. If you are hungry you are likely to over spend.

Take that calculator with you every time you shop regardless of grocery or clothing. If you are keeping an accurate total (minus taxes) you will be aware of your spending and tend to spend less.

Still need help staying on track? Get gift cards. If you use gift cards to pay you can't go over. Having cash works for some but cash can be easy to spend. Before you know it, you open a wallet to not enough money.

Use gift cards for the extra spending you enjoy. I enjoy Starbucks. At $5 a pop that can get costly if I am not careful. On average I visit Starbucks twice a week. That is roughly $40 a month. If I only allow myself to use a gift card for my purchase I can't over spend. If I choose to go more than twice in a week I am quite aware that means 1 less coffee in a future week. What I find happens is I tend to think twice about my visits and spread them out giving me extra at the end of the month.

I really enjoy going out to eat. Lets say this month I don't have enough for a full dinner but I have enough to purchase a $25 card for next month. I do this each month and save up for a full dinner. Many restaurants allow you to add to gift cards vs buying a new one each time. Try this and see how you can eat out from time to time.

Another trick to save those pennies is always round up when balancing that check book. If you spend $17.63 cents, mark it down as $18. Some banks do this for you. My bank does not offer this so we have to take care of this on our own. At the end of the month we average saving $20 just on typical spending. Take that extra and move to a savings account. One you don't have easy access to.

With every paycheck, pay yourself first. I like to start with $25. I find it easy to work with $25 less each month. Move that over to savings. If it is gone before you start spending you don't miss it.

Join clothing swap groups in your area. This is a great way to exchange clothes for something new. This is great for kids. If you don't have one, start one.

Check sites such as gasbuddy.com to find the best gas price. Don't go out of your way. Look for typical routes such as a route to and from work. Don't bother going 10 miles to save three cents. No point in wasting gas when you are trying to save.

Have all those movie channels but rarely watch them? Get rid of them and use a services such as the red box in your local area ($1 a night DVD rental) or Netflix. Not only are you saving on the cost of dropping premium channels but you are paying lesser taxes. Even paying for a pay per view movie works out on average lesser than premium movie packages.

Do you enjoy visiting zoos and amusement parks? If you visit these more than twice a year check into annual passes. These cost more up front but you save in the end. This also allows you to enjoy more visits than if you had to pay for individual trips. Another great benefit is most annual pass holders get discounts such as food.

Have kids in school that take lunch? Are you doing this to save money or a preference? If you are trying to save money add up those numbers and make sure you are. We find spending $2 a day for school lunch is actually cheaper than the average $2.50 if he took lunch. Most times lunch taken to school is a sandwich (bread, meat, cheese, mayo), bag of chips, fruit, and a drink. Add in the average cost of Ziploc bags, paper bags or lunch bags, small thermos, cooling pack, it works out to a tad more. You may find you spend less on your child taking lunch but check the numbers. You may be surprised.

Before buying a new bottle of your favorite cleaning product, do they have refill bottles instead. Why pay for a new bottle when you can save by buying a refill bottle. Most times I personally find the refill bottle is roughly $2-3 more than the single purchase giving me a minimum of 25% savings.

Check that cell phone. Most people have a plan that is well above their needs. Make sure you are not overpaying for services you need. Not only check the minutes but check add ons. Do the same with your home phone. How many may have an answering service when they have an answering machine at home.

Cheaper is not always better. If you have to use twice as much toilet paper using the cheap brand vs the name brand, are you really saving. Don't be blinded that cheaper is better. There are times a more expensive brand costs less in the long run.

Buying bigger because it is cheaper? Think again. This past week I decided to buy 4 cans of ravioli. They had a choice between single cans and a 4 pack. It was $0.46 cheaper to buy single then the 4 pack offered. This is not uncommon. I have come across this frequently. You always assume it is cheaper and many stores count on it. Compare prices and don't assume.

There are several ways to live well on a budget. Remember a budget doesn't mean cheap it means frugal. Sometimes that means work but you can find great deals if you are willing to look. You can really save if you are willing to be aware of your spending.

Pay It Forward

This past Saturday on our way to the race track, my son and I stopped at our local Starbucks as we always do. When we reached the cashier window the barista informed us the car ahead of us paid our order. First thought that ran through my head was "do I know them?" No, I did not know them. The barista further explained that someone did the same for them and he wanted to extend that to someone else. This is something I have read about but never seen or been a part of. I was so thrilled with the kind gesture I passed it along and paid for the car behind us.

I am committed to do the same thing monthly. Maybe if someone did something nice for someone else for no reason, that will make that day better for someone. Who knows, maybe we can keep that going all day.

Its been awhile

With the blessing of my niece's birth in July (4 weeks early), her being in the hospital twice since her birth (the most recent this past week with a 8 day stay), school ending for my husband and getting ready to start again in a week or so, my son going back to school, business and just every day life, I have not found much time to stop in and update.

I took over my husbands laptop this past week and a half so I can get some work done. Without it I would have had to spend less time at the hospital with my brother and sister-in-law.

With the baby shower last month and another coming in November, I forgot how much I love making certain gifts and crafts. I love making diaper cakes. There is just something special about them. I am going to start making them for local sales. I am not interested at this time in online sales. With local sales I can get a good sense of the shower theme and the guest of honor. Something that is very important to me and why each cake is custom and unique. I may venture to smaller cakes but we will see. I have a few other items I love to make for baby showers. How knows, maybe I have the start to a special local boutique.

Very Proud

For my brother and his wife's baby shower I made several of the decorations to include centerpieces, baby sock corsages, and a diaper cake.

The diaper cake is a 3 tier cake decorated with a floral theme.

The centerpieces were custom baby sock topiary.

Continuing the Disney theme I created a kiss jar topped with Disney Princesses. I made a matching smaller jar with a single princess for mom as a keepsake.

While mom and dad were unable to attend the baby shower due to the early arrival of their daughter, they still received a baby sock corsage and matching boutonniere.

Understanding Lupus

On Sunday July 19 our family loss a beautiful and wonderful family member to Lupus. She was funny, beautiful, carefree, caring, loving. She never sweat the small stuff. She was full of life and if that is what we all learned from her we need to enjoy every moment and leave behind the negative.

Lupus us very much alive today. As women we are more likely to be stricken with this terrible disease than men. There are more than 1 type of lupus. Our family member had systemic lupus which is the worst kind but she lived with this from age 17 until her passing just shy of 40.

I think we all wonder who we are at some point in time. I have even been asked if I personally know who I am. My answer to that is yes. I know who I am.

So who am I?
I am Olivia Jeannette Vidal born in December 1974 in a West Covina hospital to a beautiful mother whom I talk to almost everyday and a father I almost never speak of.

I am a daughter. I am a daughter who gets mad at her mother for trying to take care of her. I am a daughter looking at her mother wishing I could be half the mother she is. I am the daughter to a man who loves me; blood or not. I am a daughter who drove my parents to the brink of insanity rebelling against all I was taught. I am the daughter who was secretly happy when I wasn't allowed to date certain boys even when I protested. I am a daddy's girl. I am a mommy's girl.

I am a mother. I am a mother of a handsome young man who will be 16 in March. I am a mother who was scared the moment she discovered she was pregnant. I am the mother who made mistakes along the way. I am the mother who stayed at the hospital 3 days while her child was admitted for severe mono. I am the mother who cheered her son on at the football games. I am a sister. I am the sister to 2 younger brothers. I am the proud sister of 2 men with their own wives and children and thrilled all my tormenting as kids didn't harm them. I am the business owner who fumbles from time to time on a gamble that didn't work. I am the business owner how is not ashamed of the success and making that success known. I am a woman. I like to look good, feel good. I am selfish, giving, sensitive, aggressive, crazy, shy, outgoing, unsure, confident, mean, kind, intelligent, ignorant, well educated, under educated. I want to be desired, admired, appreciated. Some days I want to be ignored while other days I want to be the center of attention. I am misunderstood, miscalculated, underestimated. I am not the thinnest, tallest, most beautiful. One moment I am serious as can be and the next as immature as a 2 yr old.

I am an animal lover who can't bare to let her dogs sleep in the dog house on a cold winter night. I am the animal lover who lets her dogs sleep in her bed and lay on the couch. I am the pet lover who cries when her loved pet dies. I am the pet lover who wants to dress up her dogs for no reason.

I like happy meal toys, pens, shoes, Disney, cooking, crafting, cleaning, being lazy, taking pictures, taking a walk, shopping, taking part in charities, texting, online games, watching chick flicks, doing what others would never dream I would do. What I like today may not be what I like tomorrow. I can and will change my mind often.

I don't strive to be someone else. I strive to be a better me. Who I was 10 yrs ago is not who I am today. In 10 years I will not be the same as I am currently.

If I want to have breast implants tomorrow that doesn't mean I think less of myself. I don't need to explain it. If you don't understand it, don't try to. I diet to look better, color my hair to brighten my face, wear makeup so I don't scare the children, wear uncomfortable shoes because they look great on my feet, carry a cute purse because it matches my outfit.

I don't need to make excuses for who I am. I don't make excuses for why I am ever changing. I like that. I am who I am and I love that about me.

I know who I am. Maybe I don't always like what I see. The beautiful thing about that is I can change anything I want at anytime. I have that power because I never doubt that I can.

So next time someone asks me if I know who I am I proudly state yes I do. Maybe I can never fully explain who I am as I am different to different people. Maybe I will never understand why I am who I am but I am who I am regardless

Relay For Life

Last year was my first year starting and heading a team. I stumbled through it but we did our best. this year I am far better prepared after going through it once. The preparation itself has been hard.

This years theme is movies. Since this is an overnight event and we are a football family, I have chosen to go with Friday Night Lights. We have a football themed campsite with football themed items for sale and we will sell glow items. I am also giving away 100 reusable totes with fillers and samples from WAHMs.

Today is the final meeting and will be picking up the team t-shirts. I have not received the theme lap list just yet but will at the meeting. Every hour there is a different lap theme. Last year lap themes ranged from walking backwards, blowing bubbles, dribbling a basketball. Just some really fun things to do to keep things interesting during the 13hr walk.

I think the truly spectacular thing you will see at relay is the luminarias lining the track. They look beautiful with their candle flickering honoring or in memory of those who have fought against cancer.

I really enjoy this event. I get to be truly thankful to see my father walk the survivor lap and share with others. I do wish I had more support in the preparations but through the years maybe that will change. For now I am able to take care of all the needs to be done.

He's almost home!

How can it be so hard to let your child go off to camp. I know it was compounded by the fact that my brothers and their wives took a last minute vacation so it seemed as though everyone was gone. He called the other day and as soon as he said hi I started to cry. I miss him so much. If I miss him now what will it be like in 3 yrs when he graduates high school and goes off to college or the military. He may decide to do neither but I have to let go sometime.

I have found several things to do this week business wise since I didn't have to worry about making lunch or worrying where he is. That is the one benefit to being a WAHM. You eventually have your child going off to school, social event, or simply outside to play giving you some quiet time for work.

My son comes home tomorrow and I am very excited. I plan to take him to lunch and spend the afternoon hearing all about his week. With Sunday being father's day tomorrow is my big chance to snag him. The hardest part of being a parent I think is the part where you let go. That time is coming closer and closer. Knowing you have done your best in raising him to be the best person he can be is not good enough. You have been taking care of them for so long its hard to think they don't need you to raise them. They still need you but it changes.

I can define it anyway I want but it is still letting go.

Away at camp day 4

Its day 4 of his trip to camp. I did better yesterday but with mid week being here I am anxious to hear from him. I was told the kids would be calling home about mid week. Just to know he is ok would make me feel so much better. I don't know if he is having a good time, miserable, in different, or anything. We had the option of going with him but being I would have absolutely no cell or computer access I just couldn't do. I have a job to do still and with family vacation coming up I couldn't take off the extra time. Besides he is 15 and I need to let him go do his own thing without mommy and daddy. I never really seen how attached I am to him. He's my only baby and I miss him. I can't wait until he comes home and I get to hear all about his trip. I plan to take him out to dinner.

Away for camp

My son left for boy scout camp yesterday. That was hard. He has never been out of my control in 15yrs. If he has been on vacation without us it has been with my parents. This time he is off on his own. Its hard to let go especially being an only child. It had to happen sooner or later. I have to constantly remind myself he is not in his room playing games, he is not at home waiting for dinner when I am running errands late, he is not going to come running in and ask what I am doing. No friends over, no loud radio for me be upset that it is too loud. I kept thinking last night as a storm passed through that he didn't pack warm enough. While I was at the store picking up some snacks for hubby I kept think Phillip would like this. As I reached out to grab hold I remembered he wasn't home today and didn't need a snack. Was worried because he forgot my jacket and only had sweaters and sweatshirts. As we were leaving my mother's house late last night I kept wanting to call out to him to come downstairs and tell his grandparents good bye so we could leave. Just strange. He comes back Saturday so we will see how well I do after a week without. Anyone else go through child withdrawals?

My baby is no longer a baby

I am sure I should have realized this before but this week was eye opening. During my son's physical for boy scout camp he was of course measured and weighed. The weight wasn't an issue. It was the sudden realization he was just inches from being the same height as his dad. At 5'10" he already towers me at half a foot.

We will be going through several milestones the next 3 years - driving a car, getting a job, taking SATs, graduating, applying to college. Being this is our only child at this point in time it is kind of sad. At the same time I feel proud. Proud that we have done our very best to raise him to think for himself and make the right decisions about his future.

What part of "work" in WAHM do some not understand?

I have been a full-time work at home mother for nearly 3 yrs and a part-time work at home mother for several years before. The biggest obstacle I have to overcome (like most WAHMs) is not the obvious - long hours, balancing the home and kids, making the sale. The challenge is getting others to comprehend the concept of working from home. It is automatically assumed I can take time off at anytime. That is not the case. Yes I can flex my schedule if I have notice but I can't just drop and run.

I recently had an encounter where I was given a project because 2 others could not do it. One is college with a young child, no job. The other has a demanding job, no children. Now I can certainly appreciate both of these circumstances as I have been there. Problem is everyone forgot I have a full-time job as a business owner of an online handbag boutique with a consultant program. I am also mom, wife, 2 smaller businesses that I represent that I must work, heading a marketing campaign for an advertising co-op, keeping up the mini business of blogging, 2 fundraising campaigns. Now yes I will say I work more hours than the others and many times I have more stress. It comes with the territory of 80-100 hours a week.

I have to remind everyone I DO work not sit at home eating bon bons watching Oprah. Some do get upset and the first thing that usually leaves their lips is "but I have to work." Yes and so do I. Teachers this year no matter how many times I stated I work from home they always expect that I can drop and run. When I say I can't it is usually something like I thought you were a stay at home mom. No, I WORK.

This mindset is also why so many go into working from home because they don't see it as work. I am wanting to start a local work at home mothers group that not only provides support to WAHMs but also awareness and understanding what a WAHM does on a daily basis. Once all the fundraising, baby showers, marketing campaigns, and the summer craziness has slowed I will work on this idea and put it into action.

Seed packet for flowers attaching a label with your business card information. Add a popsicle stick so they can place he empty pouch near the planting grounds.
Buttons are fun and interesting.
Create a bookmark with your information.
With a food company? Offer a recipe card with your information on the back. Include names and how to order items from your company.
Business card size calendar. Calendar on one side, your business information on the other. Tip cards are great as well. Customers keep these in their wallet and next time they go out to eat, they pull out the tip card and reminded of your company.
During flu season offer up trial size bottles of hand sanitizer with your business label.
Scrapbooking companies, create blank or birthday greeting cards. Show off your products and how they are used in the creation of these. Everyone needs a card at some point.

Just four ingredients and 10 minutes prep is all you need to for an oven-ready Italian-style casserole.

Prep Time: 10 min

Total Time: 1 hour 10 min

Makes: 8 servings

1	jar (26 to 28 ounces) tomato pasta sauce (any variety)
1	package (25 to 27 1/2 ounces) frozen cheese-filled ravioli
2	cups shredded mozzarella cheese (8 ounces)
2	tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese

1.	Heat oven to 350°F. Spray bottom and sides of rectangular baking dish 13x9x2-inches, with cooking spray.
2.	Spread 3/4 cup of the pasta sauce in baking dish. Arrange half of the frozen ravioli in single layer over sauce; top with half of the remaining pasta sauce and 1 cup of the mozzarella cheese. Repeat layers once, starting with ravioli. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
3.	Cover with aluminum foil and bake 40 minutes. Remove foil; bake uncovered 15 to 20 minutes longer or until bubbly and hot in center. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting.

My garden

This past week has been quite difficult as my father has been ill. He was experiencing numbness in his legs and it was spreading into his hands. They admitted him to the hospital Monday for tests but came up with a conclusion that was not expected. His blood sugar is not being controlled. His symptoms are being blamed on uncontrolled diabetes. With him having to battle cancer in the past, my fear was this came back just in a different part of the body.

I found myself looking for ways to occupy my mind. My mother has decided to start to garden again after so many years. We enjoyed this for so many years. I can remember as a young girl helping my mother. I still have memories of my brother just under me going out to the garden and talk to his special plant. We were always taught to talk to our plants and they would grow from love. This made me decide to join my mother and start a garden of my own.

My garden started with 3 flower pots for my front porch. I planted the seeds last weekend so expect to see them begin to sprout this coming week. Next came 3 mini small herb pots I found at target. They were only $1 each and will adorn my kitchen window for a bit. I have also started plants from my mothers seeds that she will be planting this year - zucchini, cucumber, broccoli, 2 types of tomatoes, spinach. I will also add onions, green onions, garlic, cilantro, and chili. The men in my life like their salsa so what a great way to go by growing my own.

I plant to keep this in large planters along the back porch this year. Next year my garden will be in a section of the yard prepared. It seemed as though time crept up and didn't have time to get my area sectioned and prepared.

With my new garden I hope to regain back some of the special times I miss with my son. As he grows into a man, being around mom is not always very cool. With my brothers' growing families this will become great memories as I share my garden with my nieces and nephews.

Something wonderful that can be used for starting those gardens are empty egg cartons. Not the styrofoam cartons. The cardboard. Most of these are recycled already. Place soil and seeds in each compartment. When it is time to plant in your garden you can even just cut these up and plant. The carton will break down and is completely safe. Just another way to add a little green to your lifestyle without changing much.

Teachers make it diffcult for some WAHMs

I am finding my sons teachers do not understand the concept of a work at home mother. I cannot be the only one they have ever come across. The comment I get often is "since you are home all day...". What!? Yes I am physically home but that doesn't mean I can drop everything at any moment. I am a working mother just like those who work outside of the home.

This year seems to be especially difficult with many teachers as it is. My son has ADHD and as he enters puberty it almost amplifies the symptoms making it difficult to work with. Medication can only do so much and I will not over medicate so teachers do not have to accommodate his needs. This is where the comment comes in most the time. As if my being home all day will allow me to take him to school each day and go to every class.

I have never had so many teachers work against me in his moving forward in his studies and personal growth in his 10+ years of schooling. I believe some teachers feel (coming from various other comments) ADHD is something you grow out of by the teenage years and he should be able to better control himself. I am sorry but that is not the case. He is doing far better than I did in school at this age but I sometimes fear he won't be able to complete school in a regular setting with such resistance from teacher thinking old school that overactive, inattentive children have no self control and comes from bad parenting.

The other problem is teachers do not get the education they need to understand and work with such disorders. What about these children with autism? Yes many children with disorders are placed in special education but many are in inclusive classes. We all have the same goal. We just go about it differently. That goal is for our children to be at their best and get the education they deserve. Many other disorders get more exposure for what they go through and receive more accommodations, compassion, and understanding than my child who has a disorder as well. I too suffer from this disorder and every day I struggle to stay focused. I learned to adapt and most do not see what I go through.

Don't misunderstand. I am not saying mothers working outside of the mom need less support or children with other disorders should be ignored. I am just trying to wrap my head around the idea I am seen is a stay at home mother not a work at home mother and my child chooses not to control himself and stay focused and control impulses like other children.

We need ADHD awareness. It is real. It is highly misunderstood and greatly misdiagnosed. This is why we need the education and awareness. We need the funding for better research. We need the funding to better educate teachers, parents, health care providers. Where are our walks to raise awareness and donations. Where is the education so doctors are not passing on a prescription and sending us on our way. Where are the teachers that have been well taught.

There are great doctors out there. There are great teachers out there. There is just not enough. We had one up until about 4 yrs ago. His pediatrician was fabulous. He was well versed in childhood and adolescent ADHD. He worked with us. Never against. We had some great teachers in elementary school who understood and worked with him. He thrived. It wasn't until middle school (7th grade) and the loss of our doctor that he had since birth. Children with ADHD do not do well with too many changes. They like routine and habit. That is why they follow the same patterns over and over. Its what they know.

Now I just need to get next years teachers on board and hopefully squash the resistance we have felt for so long. He will be a 10th grader next school year, learning to drive, following with a job to start in the summer before 11th grade. Maybe I can finally get these teachers to understand I do work. I just happen to work from home. Maybe they will learn I have to schedule meetings just like everyone else. I can't always take their calls at anytime during non-emergencies. I can't do their job with just a phone call putting my child on the phone to tell him please just get through the class without her calling me again. And maybe I can keep teachers from punishing him for what he has no control over and using a zero as punishment. Until then I will campaign to change their thinking of WAHMs and ADHD.

Flour children

One way to get a rise out of your child is to mix up a batch of craft dough he can turn into a family of stand-up dolls and pets. Once they're baked, he can outfit his collection by painting on features, clothes and accessories.

To make the dough, combine 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of water in a mixing bowl. Knead the dough until it is smooth and rubbery.

For each doll, first form a head by rolling a piece of dough between your palms (it should be roughly the size of a Ping-Pong ball). Make a second, slightly larger ball for the torso. Or, if you want to dress the figure in a skirt, shape a triangular trunk. Press the head onto the torso, applying a few drops of water to make the dough sticky, if necessary.

Next, shape and attach cylindrical arms and legs. Pinch the lower ends of the legs to form feet. Attach ears and a nose, and use a toothpick to etch facial features. Bake the figures on a foil-lined cookie sheet for 1 hour in a 275-degree oven. Remove from the oven and set aside until cool enough to handle.

Now your child can fashion footwear for his dolls by flattening pieces of dough into thin circles and wrapping them around the feet. (Remember, the bottoms of the shoes will need to be level for the figure to stand up on its own.) Use the same method to craft a wig for the doll's head.

Bake the figures for an additional hour. Let them cool before painting (acrylics work best). Unbaked dough will keep in the refrigerator for about a week.

You can do what with baking soda?

Of course you know you can bake with baking soda, and you probably know you can add it to your washing machine to give your laundry detergent an extra boost but here is a list of uses you may not know!
· Puts out fires in clothing, fuel, wood, upholstery and rugs.
· Adding baking soda to your laundry helps get out grease and oil!
· Baking soda removes stains from marble, Formica, and plastic surfaces when you make a paste by adding water.
· Add it to your kitty litter to help with stinky odors!
· Sprinkle in the bottom of your dishwasher to help with odor build up and also run a cycle with baking soda instead of soap to give your machine a good cleaning!
· Keep drains clean and free flowing by adding 4 tsps of baking soda in the each week. Flush it down with hot water.
· Soak your shower curtain in water and baking soda to clean them.

Faux Fish Sticks

What's for dinner this April Fools' Day? Cookie fish sticks and tart taffy peas.

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:
	Cornflakes
	Sugar wafer cookies
	Peanut butter
	Green taffy candy (we used green apple AirHeads)
	Seedless strawberry jam

1. For the fish sticks, place a couple of handfuls of cornflakes in a ziplock bag and crush them with a rolling pin. Cover 2 sugar wafer cookies with peanut butter, then toss them in the cornflake crumbs to coat.

2. For the peas, tear off and roll small pieces of the taffy candy into balls. If the taffy is too stiff to work with, microwave it for about 6 seconds.

3. For the ketchup, use a fork to stir a few teaspoons of the jam until it's smooth.

They grow so fast

My one and only baby is 15 today. He is grown so much this past year especially the last 6 months. Not only is he taller than I am he is looking so grown. The hair above his lip is darkening, his voice is changing. He doesn't look like the boy I still see him as.

When you are with your children daily, you don't see the changes as clearly as others. Just suddenly one day you think my goodness you have grown. Sometimes it takes you back a bit when you suddenly realize they grew before your eyes and you didn't even notice. Doesn't make us a bad parent. We just want to harness those special years.

I think ahead to 1 year from now. In a year he will be driving, have a job, maybe a girlfriend. His 10th grade year will be coming to an end in 1 year and the decisions about his future will begin.

His time as my baby is coming to a close. In 3 years he will be a legal adult and ready to make decisions for himself. That day will come with great pride as well as great sadness. We spend 18 years teaching our children how to be the person they will one day become. We hope and pray we did all we could and hope not to look back in regret for what we were not able to do. We hope and pray they will understand why we said no to so many things. One day they will understand.

Backyard Bird Feeder

Spoon-feed your winged neighbors with this
homemade birdseed dispenser.

CRAFT MATERIALS:
	Clean 1-liter soda bottle
	Craft knife
	2 wooden spoons
	small eye screw
	Length of twine for hanging
Time needed: Under 1 Hour

1. Start by drawing a 1/2-inch asterisk on the side of a clean 1-liter soda bottle, about 4 inches from the bottom. Rotate the bottle 90 degrees and draw another asterisk 2 inches from the bottom. Draw a 1-inch-wide circle opposite each asterisk, as shown.

2. Use a craft knife to slit the asterisk lines and cut out the circles (a parent's job). Insert a wooden spoon handle first through each hole and then through the opposite asterisk, as shown.

3. Remove the bottle cap and twist a small eye screw into the top of it for hanging.

4. Finally, fill your feeder with birdseed, recap it, and use a length of twine to hang it from a tree.

Spring No-Snow Globe

Here's a twist on the traditional snow globe: fabric flowers, plastic figures, and a pinch of glitter in a recycled jar celebrate the coming of the warmer season.

CRAFT MATERIALS:
	Clean jar with lid
	Fabric flowers
	Small plastic figures
	Hot glue gun
	Floral wire (optional)
	Glitter and confetti
	Teflon tape, also called plumber's tape, found in hardware stores
	Scissors
	Green paper
Time needed: About 1 to 2 Hours

1. Turn the lid upside down. Loosely arrange the flowers and figures on it, periodically placing the jar over the items to check for fit.

2. Use the hot glue gun to adhere the flowers and figures to the lid. To attach the butterfly in our globe, we first hot-glued the figure to one end of a piece of floral wire, then hot-glued the wire's other end to the lid.

3. Fill the jar with water to within a half inch from the top and add the glitter and confetti.

4. Dry the rim of the jar and wrap one layer of Teflon tape around the threads to ensure a leak-proof seal. Immerse the decorations in the jar and tighten the lid.

5. Cut and fringe the green paper to make a decorative base and glue it around the lid.

Refreshing water

As the summer approaches it is time to think about how to stay cool and refreshed. One way is water. While a glass of ice water on a hot day sounds wonderful, it can get boring. I like to add fresh fruit to flavor the water. Slices of strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew, citrus, kiwi and strawberry, even grapes are wonderful. My all time favorite is pieces of watermelon leftover from the picnic. Just add as much or as little as you like. Add slices instead of chunks whenever possible. Do this the night before in a large pitcher allowing the flavor to infuse. For a light flavor this can be done with a single glass of water or a pitcher. No need to sweeten as the natural sugars of the fruit will take care of that. Mix different fruits for a variety of flavor combinations. Berries with citrus can be wonderful. Apples and melon can be very refreshing. Kids love it. Add a splash of club soda and you have a fresh and light flavored soda without all the calories and sugar. For a deeper infusion add hot water, not boiling, to approximately 4 cups of sliced fruit per gallon of water. Allow to cool before placing in refrigerator. Experiment on your own and find your perfect blend. Feel free to share with us.

Relay for Life is in full swing for 2009!

Our local Relay for Life is June 26-27

For those unfamiliar with Relay for Life, Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Our team will be walking a track at Rio Rancho High School in Rio Rancho, NM. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Our Relay even this year will run from 7pm to 8am.

We Relay to:

Celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. The strength of survivors inspires others to continue to fight. My father is a bladder cancer survivor and we celebrate his life at every years event.
Remember loved ones lost to the disease. At Relay, people who have walked alongside people battling cancer can grieve and find healing. My grandfather lost his battle to lung cancer in 1992. We walk to remember his life and his battle.

For a week someone advertised their party and even had help doing so. All week myself and others could only talk about how excited we were to attend and buy. Being I was a previous customer of this company I knew what I wanted and really anticipated the party. When I heard there was a party coming I even held off from ordering from the company site in case there was an actual party which was about 3 weeks before the actual party took place.

The party was held and just happened to be on a day that my son was sick enough for the Dr. I had to take him in late and just completely forgot there was a party until the next day. At that point I kept posting on the board I wanted ordering information and any specials. For days nothing from the rep. Only the board I even seen this person in a chat room telling them I wanted to order. Still nothing. This has been 2 weeks now and I still have not made an order. Unfortunately I will not be placing an order with this lady now. I should not have to chase down someone just to give them my money. If I have to chase them down, will I actually get my order?

Has this happened to anyone else? I am leaving the persons name and company out on purpose. This wasn't an actual bad transaction. Just no transaction at all. I have had great transactions with the company just unfortunately I can't seem to get myself a steady consultant outside of parties. There is no close representative in my state so I have to rely on the internet.

I have just never had to chase down anyone to make a purchase like this and not get any results. Being I own a small business with consultants and even still hold parties myself I just can't seem to wrap my head around the idea that someone would not want my money so they make the sale and make money. If someone wants to buy something from me you better believe I am going after that sale. Maybe I am just more gun ho than others but I am in the business to make money not to pass opportunity by.

If you have a business you work from home and do parties, please make sure you follow up on sales leads before and after your parties. You may just miss out on that sale because you just didn't pay attention.

Its been awhile

I know its been awhile so I better get updated pretty quick.

My personal online time is getting cut very short these days. Even my working time. I have to get everything done by a certain time so I can get dinner started and leave the computer to hubby for his homework. He has been trying to get some homework done at work to allow me extra time on the computer. Soon this will not be a problem when he gets his laptop the first week of Feb. This is when the student loan balances are dispersed for the term.

Our son has ADHD and seems we are going backwards. This is what was expected when he hit puberty. He is a bit of a late bloomer with puberty so its starting to hit a little fast. That isn't the problem though. The problem comes in with his obsession to steal items. If we have goodies in the house he will steal it even if he has his own set of snacks. I have gone as far as feeding him 4 full meals in a day then add snacks. That does not help. I have taken all sugary snacks out and he will still find something to steal. Nobody can figure out why he does this. It doesn't happen at other houses such as his grandparents. Just ours. We have used the techniques offered by Dr's and counselors but still nothing. His medication seems to be at the right dose. Right now it appears we just need to ride it out.

I am in the process of organizing a moms group locally for moms like me. One with older moms or moms with older children at home. There is at least one mom group around here but all younger moms with younger children. I just don't seem to fit in. While they discuss preschool coming in the next couple years, I am discussing college coming in the next couple years. I know to some that seems strange but I can no longer relate to potty training and learning the ABC's anymore. I relate to driving school and studying for the SAT's.

I am very proud last night though. I created a recipe that turned our right the first time. When I start a recipe, it is always off a bit and I at least need to make it once more to tweak it. It was a ravioli covered in a cream sauce with mushrooms and bacon. Although perfect I am going to make a variation in the future that includes finely chopped baby spinach in the sauce. I will put up the recipe by Monday when I make edits to my chicken scratch.

If you have never had fresh spinach you are missing out. I hate spinach growing up. We were fed the cooked spinach in the cans. It is not pleasant. Fresh spinach is very different. It is not as strong and a bit on the sweet side. I still have a hard time eating it in salad because of my younger years but I can cook with it. I hide it in spaghetti and nobody knows the difference.

Ever since I was young I always liked to cook and invent recipes. Sometimes good. Sometimes bad. That experimenting paid off and I do quite well in my cooking. It must run in the family. My younger brothers both have the same love of cooking and creating their own recipes. One is in culinary school to become a chef. Not long after he graduates I plan to open a store and throw an opening party. I told him he is already hired to cater.

I think I am caught up for now. I hope this finds everyone well.

Started MonaVie This Week

On Liv's WAHM Blog I do product reviews regularly. This next 2 weeks I am trying and reviewing MonaVie. So far it has been an interesting experience. I can't say too much yet as it will all be revealed in the review. It has really been a fun experience. My MonaVie review will be ready the last week of Jan or 1st week of Feb.

MonaVie is not the first. I have had the chance to try several products over the last several months. Not only able to try but share those experiences. I started product reviews due to the lack of real feedback. Many times I wondered about something particular and did a search. Nothing available except a sales pitch. Even testimonials can be decieving. Not that they all are but I can't necessariy trust them. Just like movie reviews many times they pick what they want to show. I have been part of companies where management actually told staff to makeup testimonials. Maybe its unfair but that is why I never trust them.

In my product reviews these are products I do not represent in any way and I am not paid. I will tell you exactly how I feel about it, good or bad. This way others can see a real experience by a real person using a real product. Being able to share that makes me feel good. I am able to contribute in some small way. In very few cases I can actually prevent others from making a mistake by buying a product that does not live up to its claim.

Creating a schedule

With the new changes of having a college student (being my husband) now in the home, I am finding it is necessary to create a schedule so everyone stays on track. I never worked off a schedule in the past for the entire family as I always felt these were so strict. Now that it has become necessary I can see why so many families utilize them. The schedule will be most beneficial when it comes to computer use, meals (including meals on weekends and holidays), family time, household chores, and quiet time to allow everyone time work without interruptions. Our activities outside of the house are also increasing so this will be crucial in keeping up.

One issue I am running into is family functions. While functions within our house are easily controlled, those outside of the house are not. Most times we have family members who relay information about get-togethers and parties just a few days before. No matter how often we have mentioned the inconvenience of this nothing has changed. If we choose not to go due to schedule conflicts it creates tension in the family. In the end it is not worth it. Everyone else chooses to conform forcing us to do the same. In the future I am hoping to find an effective way to convey the respect we need in relation to short notices and the inability to attend when this takes place.

Working around deadlines and prior engagements we are determined to schedule 1 day a month for the family. We each take turns choosing a destination or activity for that month and make the necessary arrangements to follow through. With my son getting older, my husband in college full-time and working full-time, and my business that I operate from the home, I think this is important we find the time and make every effort to spend quality time together.

Oh what a Monday

Today was the first day of the next 2 years as the wife of a college student. I accompanied him today to help purchase his books and supplies. His knee has still been an issue but did very well considering the walking and climbing required.

We currently only have the 1 computer setup so this will be a challenge for the next couple weeks. We will be setting up the second computer that is down currently until he can get ahold of a laptop in the next month or so. The struggle over the computer has already begun. This is placing the 2nd computer in top priority.

Tonight will be a late night at work. Deadlines are closing in. It will get easier. Just a lot of adjustment when things change.

I have aquired a new notebook folio that also stores a great monthly calendar. What is so wonderful is the calendar has pages that flip over the top for easy access. It also has a storage pocket and pen placement in a secure way. I found this at Walmart for only $8. Its a soft faux leather cover and very professional looking. Its a great item for the work at home mother.

Wife of a college student

Most situations it is the wife in college. I am in the reverse position. Not only in the reverse position but my husband works outside of the home. He will be taking on a full class load of 5 classes (15 credit hours) on top of his full-time job.

I am excited for him. He will be working towards accomplishing a goal he has longed for. I am also very proud. He has thought long and hard about what he will be sacrificing and even considering the feelings and sacrifices of his family.

This will be hard for us all and I expect that. Most of his evenings he will have his head buried in books. Many weekends he will be hard at studying and even toting a laptop to family outings so he can do classwork in between activities. This will take juggling and being flexible of us all to support him in his studies.

As a strong family, we will make it work.

Tuesday 1/6/09

Tuesday I awoke to a man in pain. My husband has knee problems and today they escalated to the point he could barely place weight on his problem knee. He stayed home of course and after 5 calls to 5 different dr offices, no appointments available anywhere. Even after explaining the issue the closest appointment is available next week. Choices are Urgent Care which has a $50 deductible on top of the $35 copay for the visit. $85 to be seen is ridiculous in my opinion. Next choice, ER. Being a veteran using the local VA hospital there is no copay. Problem is to be seen can be 8 hours. Waiting for 8 hours to be seen can be torture and those with joint pain can understand the problem. He opted to decline both options, rest, and take OTC pain relievers for now.

At some point in the day I take 30 minutes to drink a nice cup of tea with sugar and milk while I surf the net. I do my best to stay away from work related surfing as this is my time to read the news, update my MySpace or Facebook, or visit one of my favorite WAHM forums. There wasn't much for updating so I decided to look over some new sites I have come across. Some of these sites gave me ideas for new blogs on one of my other blogs. I came across a site that boasted professionalism but looked more like a MySpace page with so many glitter graphics, busy backgrounds, videos, "fun" survey's and far too much wording. Monday January 5, 2009 Part I

Today was a late start. I spent a good part of last night working on the catalog. A full product catalog is a lengthy process in construction. Because of this I spend many late nights working after everyone has gone to bed and the house chores are done. That led to me sleeping in a tad. Not by much and not past my open hours posted. It did prevent me from getting any house work done prior to the first day's work.

Today is inventory. I need to get this done so we can reopen tomorrow. I have the begining of a cold and finding energy is very much lacking. I keep a bottle of the 5 hour energy around that I find helpful on days I need a little more pep. Being so late in the afternoon I finally took half the bottle to see if I can find the little extra I need to go the counts. In the meantime I have resorted to changing my brochures and continuing the catalog.

In about 30 minutes I will be taking a break to spend time with my son after his first day back from winter break. As he settles down to begin homework I will go back to work. I break any time he has a question or needs help with homework. At 6 I will break for 2 hours so I can prepare dinner and spend time with my son and husband. I am usually back to work at 8 until approx midnight.

Inventory Time

With the new year upon us it is time for inventory and then moving to get those books straight for taxes. Today it was planned to begin the inventory count. Unfortunately this did not occur as planned but I am ready for Monday

Before a count could be started paperwork is a must. I am always buying new product to test before I add to the product line and not always do they make the cut. Because of this they do not make the main inventory list. I have to pull these sheets separate. I have 3 lists I combine. Others may have a different opinion on how this should be done but this is what works best for me at this time.

The 3 sheets I combine for inventory are - site inventory (how much was sold on the site and currently available), order inventory (what I order in for resale), sales inventory (total sales since not all sales occur online, includes samples and demo). These combined will give me total inventory in and out. It will also ready me for sales documentation.

These do not sound as though lengthy amounts of time are the case but in fact it is. While most is already done to some degree there is still integration and corrections to be made. For a Saturday I spent my entire schedule allotted taking care of this. That is why no inventory today.

Business is important but family is more important. I have vowed to take only 4-5 hours on a Saturday while Sunday is only allowed 1 hour when I first get up and nothing in between. The rest of the time is dedicated to family as it should. I can however steal some extra time when my 2 guys are off for some father/son time.

Monday will be inventory counts as well as reorganization. Inventory should take roughly 3-4 hours although I am allowing up to 5. Things happen and I always allow that extra time. Reorganization should take about the same and will roll over to Tuesday. If I do not allow for an extra day I will cut into the evening with family when is supposed to be for dinner, homework, and quality time with the family. Monday is return to school day so it is important I do not run past 5pm ideally.

Sunday I take off with the exception of my 1 hour. I will come back to talk about what takes place during that hour.

School is out - The challenge

Christmas break (or winter break if we are to be pc) is coming to and end and I must say I am thankful. I truly love having my son home as often as I can keep him home but the challenge has been staying with a work schedule.

When I first get on the computer I want 2 hours uninterrupted time. Everyone is aware of this and has become the habit of everyone that mom is working from this time to this time. Outside of this I can take breaks, which I need anyways, but times I feel as though I am constantly doing this. For an hour today I would begin working in some capacity then you hear "mom??" You don't want to send him away but at the same time I have done nothing for an hour.

This is not a one time occurrence. This happens nearly every day. Problem is on days he is out of school I was getting less and less done. I know there are other moms out there who have more than 1 child to attend to daily that are not in school just yet. I had to come up with a solution.

Solution one that works well on high demand business days - The trusty timer. When I need time uninterrupted I place the timer on 30 minutes. During that time unless an emergency I cannot be disturbed. At that point I will take a 5 minute break and we can discuss anything he likes. Once our break is up the timer is set again. I seem to take several breaks this way and my day is extended but it stays productive.

Solution two - put him to work. He enjoys the fact he can help me out from time to time. He counts my shipping boxes to ensure I have the minimum on my list in the storage area. He cleans the storage area, checks off shipments posted on the dry erase board, files shipment invoices by date, assembles advertising packets (business cards, flyer, brochure, pen, folder or envelope). These are normally quick tasks he finds easy to accomplish and allows him extra time with me but allows me to stay productive.

There are many of you moms out there with little ones at home and go through the same thing I have 10 fold. I want to know what do you do to stay productive and attend your children.
